SS07: Snowbound!
July 16th, 2024 | 1 hr 45 mins
guest, super special
We're joined by artist extraordinaire, Rosie Shaw, to discuss the various adventures and misadventures of our girls when a snowstorm of the century hits Stoneybrook with tons of warning that no-one heeds. The parents make a lot of dubious choices when it comes to the girls and their predicaments, but it wouldn't be a BSC super special without some over-the-top occurrences!

SS06: New York, New York!
June 13th, 2023 | 1 hr 22 mins
guest, super special
Summer Semester has arrived and we're back with a new super special! We're joined by YA librarian, Crissy Varnell of the Chattanooga Public Library, to discuss another two-week vacation from school for our babysitters, this time with a trip for all of them to New York City, inspired by Claudia's desire to attend a specific art school during the break. As is typical for super specials, our girls have varying levels of ridiculousness in their assorted adventures, including international intrigue, agoraphobia, jealousy, and, of course, boys.

SS05: California Girls!
July 5th, 2022 | 1 hr 48 mins
guest, super special
We're back from our Summer Vacation with another super special! We're joined by YA librarian and mom of next generation BSC readers, Dr. Lyn Scharf Hunter, to discuss our babysitters' two-week, non-Christmas winter break trip to California after winning the lottery. As usual, hyjinks of varying levels occur, but this time around we're spared of any extended truly life-or-death stakes.

It's another super special with the return of our first super special guest, Katie Schneller! We discuss Dawn and Claudia's shipwrecked adventure off the coast of Connecticut and question the intelligence and decision-making of basically every parent in Stoneybrook.

Kristy and the Secret of Susan! (Part Two)
August 17th, 2021 | 1 hr 6 mins
guest, kristy, main series
Kate and Lauryn promised another neurodivergent and autistic voice to discuss Kristy and the Secret of Susan and are back with another super special episode to do just that, this time speaking with Brianne Leeson, a writer, artist, voice actor, podcast host, and sensitivity reader who joined us to share her experiences and perspectives. She introduced us to the word "allistic," which means not autistic, giving some additional nuance to the discussion surrounding autisic, neurodivergent, and neurotypical. In addition to discussing Kristy and the Secret of Susan, we dive into Brianne's experiences working with writers as a sensitivity reader, offering examples of what that entails and the type of feedback she's able to provide, discuss characters coded as autistic (rather than outright described as such), including Elle Woods from Legally Blonde and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and hear more about the podcast she created - Today's Lucky Winner - which she described as "a raunchy, chaotic, supernatural comedy - Buffy for stoners."

Kristy and the Secret of Susan! (Part One)
August 3rd, 2021 | 1 hr 20 mins
guest, kristy, main series
Kate and Lauryn are back from their summer vacation with a main series episode that's also a super special episode! As promised, we're returning to Kristy and the Secret of Susan, which we skipped in our regularly-scheduled rotation due to the franky pretty terrible plot focused on Susan, an autistic girl in the neighborhood, and Kristy's problematic reactions to Susan and her family and life. And also as promised, we've invited someone with significantly more experience with neurodivergence and the autism spectrum to join us to share their perspective and help to unpack all of the issues with this book. Our guest is Lyric Holmans, the Neurdivergent Rebel themselves! We discuss the ins and outs of Kristy and the Secret of Susan, the autism spectrum and neurodivergence in pop culture (spoiler alert - it's basically never good or right), and Lyric's recommendations for supporting other neurodivergents and being a good ally.

SS03: Baby-Sitters' Winter Vacation!!
April 13th, 2021 | 2 hrs 19 mins
guest, super special
It's another super special with another super special guest, Jen Forbes, the host of our spiritual sister podcast, Oof! Right in the Childhood. We discuss our babysitters' school trip to a ski lodge, which is, of course, full of all the antics we've come to expect from a super special.

SS02: Baby-Sitters' Summer Vacation!
February 2nd, 2021 | 1 hr 20 mins
guest, super special
We’re back from our recent break with another super special, super long, super guest episode to discuss all things BSC and summer camp! Kate and Lauryn are joined by Alexandra Sommeillan to discuss the BSC’s two-week trip to a problematically named summer camp with about half of Stoneybrook. We first dive into Alexandra’s history with the BSC, her thoughts on representation with the changes to Dawn’s character for the Netflix series, her identification with Mary Anne, and get her opinions on Latinx representation in pop culture that really gets it right (particularly in Vida and One Day at a Time). Then we turn to the Super Special itself to discuss some of the more problematic aspects of the story, our ongoing disappointment in the series’ inability to give important subjects the “screentime” necessary to appropriately examine those subjects, identity and the importance of finding and knowing yourself, and the myriad maladies Stacey is afflicted with (beyond just the poison ivy of the show). And even with a guest, it wouldn’t be an episode of Generation BSC without some on- and off-topic tangents, including Oujia boards, LUV, the implications of “Christmassing,” whether or not Lake Erie is spooky, shared notebooks and journals, and (of course) summer camp in popular culture.

EM009: Emergency Meeting - A Conversation with Anna Nguyen re: The Claudia Kishi Club and the Netflix Series!
August 4th, 2020 | 55 mins 31 secs
claudia, emergency meeting, guest, netflix series
Kate and Lauryn are joined this week by Anna Nguyen, a PhD student in rhetoric and composition who also uses her Instagram (@whatwouldclaudiawear) to document her own sartorial choices and meta-literary commentary on the Baby-Sitters Club. We discuss Sue Ding’s documentary, The Claudia Kishi Club, and the Netflix series generally and touch on some specifics from the book series as well. In our discussion, we examine the model minority myth and the othering of Claudia in descriptions related to such myth. Anna notes that the legacy of Claudia for Asian Americans is largely positive and shares her concerns on why she feels differently. In doing so, she unpacks the significance of identity categorizations and the tendency to universalize experiences in monolithic ways. We dive into the cultural impact of the new Netflix series, the general reception and reactions since its release, and why we (as a culture) might not be viewing it as critically as we watch and discuss. The concepts of “white excellence,” the “white savior complex,” and “black shows” vs. “white shows about black characters” come up in our discussion of the series and the books themselves when we deconstruct Kristy’s characterization in particular, including a discussion of how changing the race of some of the characters for the show had broader implications in the interpersonal reactions. We round out the conversation with an examination of the opportunities in our future discussions related to socioeconomic issues, racism, and the use of Native American imagery and names.
One small correction: In a reference to the problematic Asian character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Anna mentions Mickey Rourke as the actor in that role. Mickey Rooney appeared in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

SS01: Baby-Sitters on Board!!
March 10th, 2020 | 1 hr 49 mins
guest, super special
It’s a super special, super long, super guest episode to discuss the first Super Special - Baby-Sitters on Board! Mr. Pike wins a week-long cruise/Disney trip at work and the Pikes invite Stacey and Mary Anne to be mother’s helpers, just like Sea City. (When this book takes place, who knows, as they reference Sea City, but say this is still that summer...) Watson decides to take the Thomas-Brewer family as well and includes Claudia and Dawn because, why not? Kate and Lauryn invite their first guest – their often mentioned friend, Katie Schneller – to join them to discuss (among many topics) the repeated plots in this book, Game of Thrones/BSC crossover fanfic, Mallory’s bunny face signature, author intention, Katie’s scarf-tying abilities, misremembered parts of the Haunted Mansion, the ranking of donut hole flavors, Rick Steves vs. Rick Dees, and (of course) Cokie Mason.
